Mealworms Explained

Mealworms, are not ‘real’ worms, but the larvae of the Darkling beetle (Tenebrio Molitor is the scientific name) Bluebirds will eat larvae (worms), pupae and beetles (before the shell gets hard), but prefer the worm form. Mealworms are also enjoyed by many reptiles and mammals. They are also suitable for human consumption.  

A Mealworm is the larva of the Darkling Beetle. They are very versatile food for feeding a variety of animals. Given the opportunity, they will eat almost anything, including plastic & Styrofoam if available. DARKLING ACRES feeds the Mealworms with Bran, Potatoes, carrot, and apple.

Tenebrio Molitor is the scientific name for the Beetle. The common name is the Darkling beetle as it is black when mature. The larva is the mealworm of the beetle, so it's not really a worm at all.

Mealworms are an amazing little grub. You can feed them to almost any animal. If you have chickens they will especially love them, in fact, you can even use the mealworm as a treat to help to train your chickens to come in at night or to come to you when called.
